Join Fossil Free Culture as a volunteer Board Member and help guide us through our transition!
Fossil Free Culture is a grassroots collective of artists, activists and cultural workers working for climate justice. We practice disobedient art, blending art and activism to stop artwashing: the association of fossil fuel corporations with cultural institutions to clean their public image.
Our end goal is to terminally erode the fossil fuel industry’s social legitimacy and create alternative visions through a decolonial, queer, intersectional, and just transition lens.
In the coming months, we will focus on the development of our Disobedient Art School and a new program, Disobedient Futures, in addition to our continued actions at the few remaining cultural institutions in the Netherlands still accepting sponsorships from fossil fuel corporations. FFC has embarked on a rebranding project as well as a full overhaul of our mission, vision and structure, which we aim to complete by the end of 2022.
Job description
FFC is looking for two new Board Members. Are you an artist or cultural worker with a focus on political and activist themes? Someone with nonprofit or NGO management experience and/or experience leading organizations through a transition? Then we want to hear from you!
The Fossil Free Culture Board has an advisory role with plenty of opportunities for working more closely on our projects and programs, based on interest and ability. In addition to our two current Board Members, Fossil Free Culture would like to add:
- one with a background as an artist or cultural worker (ideally at the intersection of climate justice or activism);
- one with a nonprofit or NGO management background (ideally with experience leading organizations through transition, rebranding and/or growth).
Board Members commit to four meetings per year (in person, when possible) in addition to one Board Retreat. Attendance at Fossil Free Culture events (such as Open Studios, workshops and talks) is appreciated but not required. The Board helps guide Fossil Free Culture on organizational issues, fundraising and advising on programmatic content. They will be supported by a freelance team consisting of two artistic directors/programme makers, one project manager, one producer, one communications manager, one administration officer and a large network of committed volunteers.
This position is on a voluntary basis (volunteer stipend available up to €180/month and a maximum of €1800/year) for a minimum of one year. We will give preference to candidates who are able to make a two year commitment.
What you are going to do
- Collaborate with collective members and freelancers as an advisor on organizational issues;
- Ensure accountability to Fossil Free Culture’s (changing) mission and values;
- Provide strategic direction and oversight around the organization’s activities and budget;
- Contribute to Fossil Free Culture’s financial resilience through making new connections and identifying opportunities for fundraising;
- Participate in the strategic planning process;
- Attend four board meetings and one board retreat per year (approximately 4 hours per month expected);
- Approve budgets and sign contracts and agreements on behalf of the organization;
- Contribute to the success of programs and events by promoting and amplifying our work.
We are looking for someone that
Affinity for oversight and/or strategic direction and leadership;
Commitment to and expertise in climate and social justice, anti-racist, anti-extractive and anti-colonial values and practices;
Strong understanding of, or excitement to learn more about, climate justice and socially engaged art;
Has experience in fundraising from individual donors and foundations, particularly for visual arts and cultural organizations;
Has solid knowledge of, and experience working with, Dutch cultural foundations and/or activist organizations;
Is flexible and proactive;
Is responsible, organized and detail oriented;
Is fluent in English, Dutch a plus;
Is motivated and can bring positive energy to the collective work.
What we offer
A challenging Board position in an organization with an informal, nonhierarchical, flexible and creative working atmosphere. You will be part of a small advisory team that works with eight freelancers (primarily women and/or BIPOC) and a wide range of supporters and volunteers – artists, activists, writers, cultural workers, etc. We offer an inspiring position that affects relevant social change.
We know that the corporations we target and the crises we face disproportionately hurt the most marginalized people in society — including people of color, people from working class backgrounds, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people and women. We believe it is essential to center the voices and experiences of these communities in the work we do. Hence, we warmly encourage applications from people with these identities and backgrounds.
Volunteer stipend available up to maximum allowable limits. Location in Amsterdam, local preferred though work can be done remotely when necessary.
Application deadline: 31 August, 2022, 5:00 PM CEST. Please send your motivation letter and CV in English to contact@fossilfreeculture.nl
We are always looking for volunteers and collaborators.
