October and November 2022. Fossil Free Culture Groningen responded to the exhibition KLEUR! in the Groninger Museum, in which the collection’s sweethearts are exhibited through the perspective of colour. Its promotion picture is an art piece on long-term loan by SHELL, and this is not the only fossil-fueled sweetheart of the museum: the Groninger Museum is holding on tight to their sponsors Gasunie and GasTerra.
After already four actions to force the museum to let the fossil fuel companies go, a fifth call to change was necessary. By ‘hacking’ the museum’s marketing, FFC Groningen demands that the museum show its true colours. FFC edited the exhibition posters to TRUE COLOURS? to wash off the varnish and to remind the museum to break up with gas.
The fossil fuel industry uses the cultural sector to artwash its image. As long as the Groninger Museum accepts money from Gasunie and GasTerra, it contributes to the social license of the fossil fuel industry. Every dissociation with a fossil fuel company helps to dismantle the power of this destructive system.
Time to show your true colours, Groninger Museum. Break-up with gas!
