Disobedient Art

Since 2017, Fossil Free Culture NL has used aesthetics and poetics to confront the unethical politics of oil and gas sponsorship, carrying out unsolicited art performances and interventions inside the cultural institutions that accept it. Nobody invites us. We arrive with images, voices and bodies, and leave the institution with a question it can no longer avoid.

The Van Gogh Museum, the Concertgebouw and NEMO have all ended their fossil fuel sponsorship after our interventions, and other institutions cut their ties during the same years. Along the way we helped bring the ideas of artwashing and unethical sponsorship into the cultural sector, and helped change the story it tells about where its money comes from.
